Biography: Emeritus Professor Alan Smith
Professor Smith graduated from the University of Sheffield with first class honours
in Botany.
He followed this with a Ph.D. in Cambridge on vegetational and landscape history
in the north of England under the supervision of Professor Sir Harry Godwin F.R.S.
|
He then spent four years as the Senior Research Officer in the Nuffield Quaternary
Research Unit in the Queen's University of Belfast before being appointed to an
established lectureship in Botany.
He was subsequently promoted to the grade of Reader.
During this period he became an internationally recognised authority on British
landscape history.
He worked closely with archaeologists and geographers, initiated tree-ring dating
research and set up a radiocarbon dating laboratory.
He was next appointed to the Chair of Plant Science and Headship of the Department
in the University of Wales, Cardiff, a post that he held for fifteen years.
He continued to teach a wide range of topics in plant ecology and soils, plant anatomy
and plant physiology.
He has published a large number of substantial publications in scientific journals
and books.
On leaving the University of Wales they conferred upon him the title of Emeritus
Professor.
