JONATHAN SMITH

Jonathan is a graduate in Biochemistry from
Cardiff University and started his career as a resident engineer, working
on prestigious golf course construction projects and during this time he was sponsored
by his employer to undertake a full time Masters of Science degree in Agricultural
and Amenity Grassland at Aberystwyth University. While at Aberystwyth Jonathan worked
with Professor Bill Adams and undertook a research project studying anaerobic soil
processes associated with the
Black Layer condition identified in sports turf rootzones.
During and following this period Jonathan produced several
research papers which were published in the
International Turf Grass Research Journal Vol 7 and World Scientific
Congress of Golf (Science and Golf II 1994)
After leaving Aberystwyth
University Jonathan worked for twelve years with Parsons Brinkerhoff.
During this period Jonathan became a
Chartered Environmental Engineer and managed many ground and environmental
engineering projects and left in 2001 as a Senior Engineer to establish a regional
construction office for the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI).

Jonathan worked for the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) for a period of five years and during
this time he was responsible for advising on the construction of various sports
turf facilities, including horse racecourses, winter games pitches, golf courses,
cricket facilities and bowling greens. During this period he worked on many grass
roots and high profile projects and used his environmental engineering skills in
developing sports turf facilities on Brownfield (.doc
or
.pdf) sites.
